Ling462: Syntax II
Spring 2014 5 Credits Final grade: 3.3 Linguistics |
Syntax IISyntax, as a whole, was probably the most challenging set of linguistics courses I took. Everything was, at least to me, extremely abstract. I spent hours practicing drawing syntax trees in preparation for my exams with my classmates, littering the dry-erase walls of Odegaard during all hours of the day (and sometimes into the night). We took photos of our work with our phones and sent them back and forth via text messages when we couldn't meet in person.
Syntax II, specifically, is a prime example of a class I would not have taken if I didn't have to. Syntax I had already been extremely difficult and, going into Spring'14 I was not excited at the prospect of 10 more weeks of tree-drawing. It is a lesson in gritting your teeth and grinding through the things you have to to get on with those things you are looking forward to more. Short a W-Credit, I consulted my teacher and we agreed that, in exchange for completing a slightly more complicated term paper, I could receive the W-Credit I lacked. As a result, I analyzed a variety of articles pertaining to the nature of adverbs and compared them against the theory proposed by Guglielmo Cingue. The paper was extremely difficult to manage, but I had a surge of accomplishment once it was completed. |
