Study Abroad: South AfricaFrom the moment I heard of the experiential learning component, I decided that at least one of my two projects would consist of study abroad. I had never left the country prior to a trip to Israel in the summer between my first and second years at the University and was jealous of my friends studying abroad in places like Japan, Greece, and Italy. I was determined to have that experience for myself.
I applied to the program, bought my plane tickets, paid the tuition from my savings, and prepared for my departure without informing my parents. Neither of my parents knew about the trip until the week before I was to board my plane for this month-long course. I purposefully waited until it was too late for them to stop me. My completely individual undertaking of this adventure has remained my greatest accomplishment. As cliche as it sounds, I feel that I have fallen in love with South Africa. I want desperately to return on my own terms, unattached to a program. My artifact is a video I took outside of the Durban Playhouse of some dancers performing traditional Zulu dance and song. It was a highlight of my trip, second only to driving around a game reserve and seeing wild elephants only feet from me. |
