Ling533: Methods of Sociolinguistic Theory
Autumn 2014 5 Credits Final grade: 3.4 Linguistics and Honors |
Sociolinguistics III registered for the 400-level Sociolinguistics course under the assumption that I would be writing a thesis in the sociolinguistic field for departmental honors. As possibly the only undergraduate in this very small class, I at times felt a strong need to prove my worth. I worked very hard to stay up-to-date on my readings and to participate in class fully with valuable input so as to meet the lofty expectations of my professor and the high standards set by my peers. Shortly into the quarter, however, I experienced a breakdown which caused me to fall behind.
When asked by my professor why I had failed to complete an assignment, I explained to her the situation and said that I accepted the points I would lose for failing to complete the assignment on time. However, my professor was more upset at me for not mentioning the breakdown to her than she was about the assignment. Her support was completely unexpected and really touched me. Together, we worked out an alternative timeline which would allow me to turn in the missed work late and complete the rest of my assignments. Each of our assignments essentially built up to a completed research proposal. We were able to incorporate each of the assignments (such as a literature review) into the final proposal and really gain a deeper understanding of the various facets of conducting linguistic research. |
