Ling550: Introduction to Linguistic Phonetics
Spring 2013 5 Credits Final grade: 3.7 Linguistics and Honors |
PhoneticsOf my linguistics course work (honors thesis aside), Phonetics was perhaps my most difficult class. It required a very sensitive ear to the vast amounts of sounds that can be found in languages across the world which I simply did not possess. Thus the coursework was, at times, very difficult for me.
However, it was a very fulfilling course. By the time I had submitted my final paper (the artifact uploaded here) I felt extremely accomplished. The exam had proved to be less difficult than I imagined it would, and while exceedingly challenging, the paper I submitted received good marks. Introduction to Phonetics is offered concurrently as LING450 or 550. I registered for the course as a 500-level student so as to obtain natural world credit which would satisfy the honors program. 550 students were required to add an additional section to their final papers. While everyone completed a phonetic analysis of a mystery language assigned to them by Professor Wright (I received Sandawe - a Tanzanian Khoisan Language), 550 students (and those seeking to earn W-credit) additionally compared the phonetic make-up of their language with another language they were familiar with (I chose Hebrew). The full paper is uploaded here. |
