JAPAN211: 2nd Year Japanese
Autumn 2011 5 Credits Final grade: 3.3 Japanese and Linguistics |
2nd Year Japanese2nd year Japanese was very similar to the first. We continued to learn at an astronomical pace. I could hardly keep up with the nearly weekly たんご (vocabulary) and かんじ (kanji) quizzes. I spent a great deal of my time studying. However, during this time I was only taking Japanese, spending the rest of my time working downtown in an attempt to earn my residency at the UW so as to be able to afford my education.
During this year, I would find myself working four jobs (teaching Sunday School, working overnights at the library from 10-3 am, working at Forever 21, and also serving tea at Tea Republik on the Ave). It was a crash course in time management and perseverance and determination. While an extremely difficult time for me, I managed to come away relatively unscathed and with a sense of accomplishment. My part time employment prevented me from going home during winter break to see my family. This is the subject of the artifact I have included, which was a layout of a script for a speech we had to perform in front of the class discussing our winter break plans. For my part, I spoke about how I planned to sleep and play video games when I wasn't at my part-time job and lamenting how much more exciting my boyfriend at the time's plans were. |
